Student Leaders

Student leadership is vital to the success of the Newman Center ministry. Student leaders help to form and implement the vision of a campus ministry that is relevant and addresses the needs of today’s students. One of the goals of campus ministry is to form leaders whose faith is central to their lives, both for our church and for the world.

Outreach Team
The Newman Center Outreach Team (OT) is a group of students who seek to offer hospitality to new UWO students and returning students who might not be familiar with the Newman Center. During the first week of school, the OT helps with the Newman Center Welcome Week, a full week of activities for UWO students. OT members help set up and run the events, as well as make students feel welcome and at home. After the first week of school, the OT continues their ministry of hospitality by meeting with new students. The Newman Center is first and foremost a community of faith - the ministry of the Outreach Team is to continually invite people to be a part of that community.

Newman Council
The basic aim of the Newman Council is to serve the university community, promoting both intellectual and spiritual growth in Christian life.  The Council acts in a consultative role with the Newman staff in planning and programming, while facilitating implementation of Newman Center programs.  Members of the Newman Council are active, visible leaders in the Newman Center community and as a group are involved in service and outreach activities. Council members are nominated by their peers and then chosen by the Newman Center Director in consultation with continuing members of the Newman Council.  The Newman Council is also the Newman Center’s representative body to OSA, the student government at the university.  The Newman Center is a recognized student organization at the university.

Liturgical Ministries

The Newman Center Community needs your gifts to help make our Sunday masses a welcoming and enriching experience for all.  All liturgical ministers, except for greeters and musicians,  must be fully initiated in the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. A brief description of the ministries follows. Training for liturgical ministries will occur at the beginning of each semester.

  • Greeter: Hospitality is one of the most important ministries of a church community.  People were drawn to Jesus because they sensed his care for them.  Similarly, people will be drawn to this community as part of the Body of Christ if they feel welcomed and valued.  Come 25 minutes early to mass to help greet people as they come to church.

  • Lector:   The lector proclaims the Scriptures to the assembly. Being a lector is more than reading, it is a ministry of facilitating for the assembly an experience of the Word of God. This ministry requires preparation of and prayer with the reading prior to the liturgy.

  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMs):  Eucharistic ministers serve the community through their great desire to enter into the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and to help others do the same.  EMs, alongside the presider, distribute communion to the assembly.

  • Musicians:  Musicians lead the community in prayer through song.  Music in liturgy is meant to help people pray.  The musicians, through their music, draw the assembly into song and collective  prayer. Musicians practice each Sunday before mass at 6:15.

  • Acolyte: The acolyte assists the priest during mass.  During the preparation of the gifts, the acolyte prepares the altar.

  • Sacristan: The sacristan should arrive 30 minutes prior to mass to set out all that is needed for the celebration of the Eucharist. The sacristan cleans the vessels after mass, and puts away the liturgical books.
